Christine Trovato, facilitator of special education for Carbon County Career & Technical Institute, spoke at the Joint Operating Committee meeting last week.

She thanked the new teachers for their excitement and positive attitudes, and also thanked them for their support.

“In preparation for the new school year, our new teachers and support staff completed their new teacher orientation this week, and some topics that I went over with them regarding special populations include: ‘Implementing IEP and 504 Plan Accommodations — What is Your Responsibility?’ and ‘Providing in-Class Support and Co-Teaching strategies.’ ”

CCTI teachers had in-service days Aug. 20 and 21, during which Travato advised that they will go through training on such topics as “Structured Literacy: Strengthening Literacy Through Evidence-Based practices for Vocabulary and Background Building,” and will also learn about dealing with students that are experiencing homelessness.

David Reinbold, CCTI’s administrative director, thanked Trovato for her work preparing for the transition meetings.

“We try to have two adults in all of our classrooms,” Reinbold said. “That’s part of our scheduling process. If there’s a teacher that’s free, they go in another teacher’s classroom. So in almost all of our classes, we have at least two adults in there, which is great as far as support.”

In his report to the JOC, Jeffry Deutsch, CCTI business administrator, pointed out that while the fund balance has been decreasing each year, the school is still in a good position.

“As far as the 2027-2028 budget, we’re going to recommend zero increase again,” he said. “I’ll try to have that ready to pass on to the five districts at our November meeting.”
