Colt, Fillies expecting strong performances

While Marian’s teams lost some key members to graduation, the Colts and Fillies still expect strong showing from a number of their teams.

The volleyball squad is primed for a successful year, while the cross country runners are hopeful of strong showings during the regular season and beyond.

And even the girls soccer team, despite a tough year record-wise last season, is looking to improve.

VOLLEYBALL

Head coach: Maria Currie (3rd season)

League: Schuylkill League

Key losses: Alena Lombardo, Isabella Horvat

Key returnees: Seniors Maddy Davis, Kali Grochowski; Sophomore JoElle Currie; “Kali had 189 kills, 209 digs and 72 aces last year. She’s stepping into a bigger leadership role as captain with her dominant all-around play. Maddy is a presence from anywhere on the court. She is a selfless leader with 47 aces and a 93.9 serving percentage in 2025. JoElle is a sophomore but has a year of varsity experience under her belt with 402 assists and 45 aces.”

Top newcomers or others to watch: Juniors Cara Renhart, Addy Marek; sophomore Reagan LeClair; “The trio fits seamlessly into the spots left by the graduates. They have worked incredibly hard all winter and summer to grow as players and a team.”

Outlook: Marian lost a big group of seasoned players but have key underclassmen returning. This team has the potential to go deep into the postseason.

Quotable: “The start of something new brings the hope of ‘Something great.’ Losing seven seniors, you would think this would be a rebuilding year, but last year we had a lot of underclassmen on the court too and our bench was deep with talent. They are ready to take on our tough schedule.” — Head coach Maria Currie

CROSS COUNTRY

Head coach: Dominique Ramer (4th season)

League: Schuylkill Division 2

Key losses: Girls - Teaghan Biros; Boys - Darren Paulino

Key returnees: Girls - Anna Keer; Boys - James Gelatko, Achilles Fitzpatrick, Jacob Berlanda, Wade Eroh. “This whole group competed in the state meet last year and can’t wait to get them back this November. They all push each other during practices to reach their goals! Although cross country is more of an individual sport, the team aspect helps them push it over the edge!”

Top newcomers: “We also have a freshman runner, Shawna Hildebrand, who I am excited to see. Leah Grabosky is returning this year, and I’m positive will have a great year after an amazing track season last spring.”

Outlook: The teams are looking to improve on individual and team performances from last year. The Colts made it to states and are hoping to do it again while the girls are looking to improve on individual performances.

Quotable: “This team is dedicated and LOCKED IN” — Head coach Dominique Ramer

GIRLS SOCCER

Head coach: Robert Campomizzi (5th season)

Record last season: 1-17

Key losses: Teaghan Biros, Autumn Green, Malina Letcher, Emily Lapp

Key returnees: Seniors Brena Farley (defense), Madison Malloy (midfield), Kendall Van Putten Vink (defense), Haillie Mussinan (forward), Esme Petschour (forward), Camryn Shistel (midfield), Adriana Cabrera (midfield), Kassandra Hibbler (midfield), Janyssa Monks (defense); juniors Emma Williams (defense), Giselle Afeo (midfield); sophomores Ellie Mussinan (midfield), Carly Green (midfield); sophomores Willow Lare (midfield), Katie Knock (goalie).

Top newcomers: Senior Elianna McDermott (defense); junior Rylee Shainline (forward); Sophomore Nora Nothstein (midfield); freshman Christina McDermott (defense).

Outlook/Quotable: “We have a veteran led team that is looking to improve from last season. They have been working together since last off season and hoping to have it all pay off in the season. I am hopeful to hang with the best this season and continue to build our confidence.” — Head coach Robert Campomizzi

NOTE: As of press time, it was still unclear if Marian would be fielding a boys soccer team in 2026.

The Colts, who lost Edison Mitchell, Darren Paulino, Logan Aneskevich to graduation, was suffering from a low turnout. If they do play this year, their coach will be Doug Budziak.
