Smith Ends Long Drought, Kohler Wins Pro4 During Race of Champions Stop
The Race of Champions Tour returned to Mahoning Valley Speedway on Saturday, bringing packed grandstands, national exposure and an action-packed night of racing to the quarter-mile oval.
Local favorite Jamie Smith provided one of the evening’s biggest highlights, ending a victory lane drought that dated to August 2023 by sweeping the Street Stock program with a heat race and feature victory.
Starting from the pole alongside two-time feature winner Brandon Christman, Smith grabbed the lead at the drop of the green. The race’s lone caution came after the opening lap when TJ Kemmerer and Tommy Flanagan tangled.
On the restart, Smith pulled away while the battle behind him kept fans entertained. Randy Ahner, Jon Moser, Adam Steigerwalt, Frankie Althouse, Jill Snyder and Christman traded positions throughout the race, often running side by side in a fierce fight for the top spots.
Moser mounted Smith’s biggest challenge in the closing laps, repeatedly pulling alongside on the outside before Smith held him off to earn his first Street Stock feature victory in nearly three years. Ahner finished second, followed by Moser, Steigerwalt and Althouse.
Smith’s long-awaited win was one of the night’s biggest moments, with fellow competitors, crew members and fans filling Victory Lane to congratulate him.
Cody Kohler also enjoyed a flawless night, leading all 20 laps to earn his first Pro4 victory of the season in a caution-free feature.
Kohler took the lead on the opening lap after passing Rich and Kadie Pursell and was never challenged. Bobby Kibler Jr. claimed second after a spirited battle with his father, Bob Kibler Sr., while Tyler Stangle finished fourth.
Matt Hirschman and Shayne Geist also scored Race of Champions touring division victories.
Hirschman took the lead on lap 19 and went on to win the caution-filled 75-lap Modified feature. Austin Beers finished second, while early leader Kyle Strohl recovered from a spin after contact while leading to finish third.
In the Four Score 4 Cylinder Dash Series feature, Geist earned his first career victory by edging Cody Boehm by inches following a thrilling late restart.
