Mahoning hosts first drifting event

One day after the Race of Champions Tour brought stock car racing to Mahoning Valley Speedway Park, the quarter-mile oval welcomed a different style of motorsports.

The speedway hosted its inaugural drifting event Sunday, introducing spectators to a discipline built on precision, car control and style rather than wheel-to-wheel competition.

Drivers spent the day navigating controlled slides around the speedway while a second course in the pit area allowed additional participants to showcase their skills. The dual-course format kept cars on track throughout the event and gave fans plenty of opportunities to watch the action.

The event marked another step in Mahoning Valley Speedway’s effort to diversify its schedule by bringing new forms of motorsports to the Lehighton facility.

Times News photographer Gavin Kester was on hand to capture Sunday’s inaugural drifting event.
