Little League Memories
It was another exciting Little League postseason in the Times News area, both in baseball and softball, as a number of clubs captured District 18 titles and advanced to the next round.
Tamaqua’s three baseball squads all captured championships, with the 10-12 club fighting back through the loser’s bracket to earn its banner. The 8-10 team also forced an if-necessary game, eventually winning two games against Franklin Township to claim the West Division crown. Meanwhile, the 9-11 club was guaranteed a title by virtue of being the only team in the district.
On the softball diamond, Jim Thorpe’s senior squad turned in an impressive showing, winning both district and sectional championships. Thorpe and Palmerton combined to form Carbon in the 10-12 age bracket, and battled Weatherly in the finals, eventually gaining a walk-off victory in the decisive game. Weatherly’s 8-10 squad, much like Tamaqua’s 10-12 baseball team, suffered an early tournament loss but came all the way back to win five straight to claim its crown.
Throughout the tournaments, Times News photographers Ron Gower, Matt Breiner, Taj Falconer, Mason Dannenfelser, Rich Smith, Daniel Stark and Gavin Kester were there to capture the action on the field. Some of their work appears in these photos.
