Tamaqua man headbutts officer
A Tamaqua man who was caught prowling in the borough just before 3 a.m. July 11 headbutted a police officer while in custody, police said.
Malik Zver, 26, is now lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $75,000 straight cash bail.
According to police, officers were called to the 200 block of Cedar Street for a report of a man possibly attempting to break in to a structure.
Another caller heard a window smash and noted that the man, later identified as Zver, was pounding on the doors of several homes.
Police checked on homes to ensure that no entry had been made, and as they were checking, a witness spotted Zver returning to the area.
Officers ordered Zver to stop but he began running through a grocery store parking lot.
Police noted that Zver appeared highly intoxicated, and ran directly into a shopping cart return stable. Police said he fell down but got to his feet and tried running away.
Officers deployed a stun gun and took Zver into custody.
While helping Zver to his feet, police said he was so intoxicated that he could not stand.
Police called for emergency medical responders, and as they were attempting to place him onto a stretcher, he pulled away. Officers said they again deployed the stun gun and were able to secure Zver on the stretcher.
Zver was taken to St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale for treatment, where police said he continued to be aggressive toward staff and officers.
As an officer tried to get Zver onto a bed, Zver “violently” headbutted him, police said. The officer suffered a cut to his lip.
After treatment, Zver was transported to a holding cell where he continued to try to fight officers, police said.
Zver was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli on charges of aggravated assault, flight to avoid apprehension, evading arrest or detention on foot, resisting arrest, simple assault, loitering and prowling at nighttime and public drunkenness.
A preliminary hearing for Zver before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer is scheduled for July 21.
