The Weissport Borough Council is reminding the public to use caution around areas where trees and branches were damaged due to the July 3 storm that swept through Weissport and Lehighton.
“We need to make it known to the public that the yellow caution tape that is in the borough park is there for safety, and people should not go past it because large branches have fallen in those areas,” Councilman Bill Hartzell said.
Also, the wooded area between the bridges along the river is dangerous. There are hanging trees and branches there that can cause serious injury, and could possibly kill someone. Areas near the playground received damage as well.
So far, the Liberty Tree and the America250 Bell in the park have not been damaged.
Because of the severity of the damage, and where the damage occurred, the borough will be looking into hiring someone to do repairs, as the scope of the work is beyond what the borough is able to do in-house.
“I also want to commend the citizens for coming out Friday night after that storm and working very hard to clear up the park so that we could have the 250th celebration,” Hartzell added. “They did a tremendous job.”
