W. Penn to host ceremony, activities, fireworks
West Penn Township’s second annual fireworks show hopes to build off the success of last year’s event.
The event will start at 6 p.m. Saturday at the J.E. Morgan Memorial Park, 49 Cold Spring Road, Andreas. The rain date is Sunday.
Other activities will include Tamaqua Area School District student Colton Orlick singing the national anthem at 7:15 p.m., which will be accompanied by a daytime fireworks display.
“Our short day time fireworks show will be a unique treat for spectators,” said Howard Pryda, who will once again provide this year’s fireworks event. “Most people have never seen day time fireworks.”
Elvis impersonator Jay Allen will perform from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The fireworks show will get underway at 9:15 p.m.
Pryda, who along with his friend Tony Cseplo, do fireworks shows, and agreed to give the township two years of a free fireworks show.
“This year, Tony and I are very excited for the show,” Pryda said. “The show is choreographed to patriotic music and weather permitting we will be incorporating laser animations in the show.”
Pryda said there will be plenty for the kids to do throughout the day, such as a Petting Zoo, Bounce House and other activities sponsored by the West Penn Township Police Department and a local church.
In addition, there will be food and frozen treats vendors on hand as well, he said.
“Last year, I was pretty much a one-man band when it came to organizing, getting sponsors and vendors,” Pryda said. “This year, the township is involved from our supervisors to our road crew; our first responders are taking on a big role. Local churches and members of the community all coming together.
“Big thanks to them but especially my wife, Kim, my daughters, their husbands and my grandchildren, who will all have a role in bringing this event together. Fireworks are expensive, so without the generous donations from Tim at IPC Fireworks, Chris, Scott and Jake at Celebration Fireworks, and Lou and Glenn at Bada Boom fireworks, none of this is possible.”
Pryda said proceeds raised from this year’s event will once again go to first responders, police, fire and EMS.
Money raised from last year’s event also went to police, fire and EMS.
