Nesquehoning church displays historic ribbons

A Nesquehoning church is preserving some of the religious history that helped form the town.

St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church members Mary Berger and Carol Malatak recently showcased a new display of a collection of ribbons that belonged to past members of various religious societies.

The four ribbons were donated for the display and include two from the Greek Catholic Women’s Society Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God Lodge 893 of the Greek Catholic Union that dates back to 1919; one from the Greek Catholic Rusyn Society of St. John the Baptist Lodge 110 of the Union Fraternal Benefit Society, a group founded in 1896; and one from the Slovak Catholic Church Society Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, Mary, founded in 1910.

“The ribbons were traditionally worn by members of these organizations during church society organizational meetings on special occasions and at funerals,” a description of the display noted.

The ribbon display will be hung in the church, located at 9 W. Railroad St.
