‘Big Boy’ returning to area, stopping in Tamaqua, JT

The largest operating steam locomotive in the world is expected to make a brief stop in Tamaqua on July 2, according to Mayor Dave Clemson.

On that day, “The Big Boy 4014,” owned by Union Pacific Railroad, will travel from Jim Thorpe to Pottstown.

“We all know that on July 2, we have that train coming through here,” Clemson said at Tuesday’s council meeting. “You’re talking a lot of people will be coming here.”

The train departed from Cheyenne, Wyoming, on May 25 for its East Coast journey. When the train stopped in Nesquehoning last week, thousands turned out to catch a glimpse.

“From what you’re seeing in other areas, it’s nuts,” council Vice President Ron Bowman said of the crowds.

Clemson agreed.

“Just to give everybody a fair warning, traffic and parking is going to be a headache that day,” Clemson said.

Fire police will be likely called out, he noted, and Tamaqua police officers will also be on hand.

“We’re going to be out there that day,” Clemson said.

The train will likely stop for 10 to 15 minutes in the borough, likely at the Tamaqua Train Station.

“We don’t have a time yet,” Clemson said.

According to a schedule posted by Union Pacific, the train will leave Jim Thorpe at 9 a.m. and arrive in Reading at 1:30 p.m. It will reach Pottstown at 3:30 p.m. and spend July 3 in King of Prussia.

The Big Boy will then travel to Philadelphia, where it will be on display at Intrepid Avenue and League Island Boulevard on July 4 and 5 for an America250 celebration.
