Lehighton Band seeks singers for July 2 concert
The Lehighton Band is inviting area singers to join a community chorus for a special patriotic concert at 8 p.m. on July 2.
The free concert will take place at Lehighton’s Amphitheater Park and will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, also known as the nation’s semiquincentennial, with a program of stirring and reflective music honoring the country’s history, service members, and shared civic traditions.
Rehearsals will be held on Mondays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Singers do not need to attend every rehearsal in order to participate, making the opportunity accessible for those with busy summer schedules.
Those who do not preregister online may also sign up in person by attending a rehearsal.
Interested singers may register online by visiting facebook.com/LehightonBand.
Lehighton Band Director Brad Cressley said the idea grew out of conversations with members of Zion UCC’s ecumenical Christmas Cantata group, an interchurch ensemble of singers who enjoy gathering to perform together.
He said he hopes to build a large chorus of voices eager to sing as part of a broad community ensemble.
Formerly known as the Lehighton Men’s Band, the Lehighton Band was incorporated in 1865 — one year before the Borough of Lehighton was incorporated in 1866.
The songs include:
• Battle Hymn of the Republic — A powerful American hymn associated with the Civil War, known for its dramatic imagery and enduring message of justice, conviction, and national purpose.
• Mansions of the Lord — A solemn and moving hymn written in memory of fallen service members, offering a message of peace, remembrance, and eternal rest.
• Armed Forces Salute — A ceremonial medley of the official songs of the U.S. armed services, traditionally performed to honor veterans and active-duty military personnel.
• Patriotic Pageantry — A festive medley of beloved American patriotic tunes that brings together familiar melodies in a spirited concert setting.
• And more — Additional selections will round out the program with music that celebrates American heritage and community pride.
Singers of all backgrounds are encouraged to take part in this one-of-a-kind community celebration.
The Lehighton Band welcomes anyone who enjoys singing and wants to be part of a large chorus for an evening of patriotic music and fellowship.
The Lehighton AMVETS Color Guard is also scheduled to be present for the event.
