Lehighton 5th grader wins Legion essay contest

Jackson Heilman of Lehighton was the winner of the annual Essay Contest hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Shoemaker-Haydt Post 314, Lehighton.

The theme this year was “Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday and the Veterans Who Fought for our Freedom.”

Jackson and his family, along with Legion Auxiliary members, enjoyed a dinner, and Jackson read his essay following the meal:

“In 2026 the United States of America will celebrate its 250th birthday, marking two and a half centuries since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. From the Revolutionary War to the present day, veterans have played a vital role in shaping and protecting the United States.

“Honoring veterans means more than remembering their service during time of war; it also means supporting them and their families, listening to their stories, and ensuring they receive the respect they deserve.”

Jackson is the son of David and Nicole Heilman of Lehighton, and is in the 5th grade, Lehighton Area School District.

The American Legion Auxiliary also was given a Certificate of Participation for projects related to education. The Auxiliary gave crayons to Lehighton kindergarten students.
