Nesquehoning officials are warning those who utilize off-roading vehicles that police are cracking down on these types of vehicles using borough streets.
“We’re getting a number of calls on them this year,” Police Chief Bradley Hess said Wednesday during the monthly borough council meeting. “We’re going to crack down on it. It’s going to be zero tolerance.”
He said that his office has been receiving several calls from the New Columbus area especially, where riders are coming off the mountain and into that section of town, utilizing borough streets, where they are not allowed.
“You can’t be on the road,” Hess said. “We don’t care if you go 3 feet or 100 feet to get where you got to go, you can’t be on the road with them. It’s that plain and simple.”
Dirt bikes, ATVs and quads have been a growing problem over the last several years within the borough, with riders coming in from around the state and nearby states to ride on private land. While riding on private land is permitted, these riders have been driving on borough streets, creating excessive noise in residential areas.
In other matters, council directed borough Solicitor Robert Yurchak to look into drafting an ordinance regulating electric bikes and scooters in the borough.
Hess said that the police received information outlining what is legal, but an ordinance would help better outline what the borough wants.
