‘Flushable’ wipes cause sewer issue in Coaldale
Coaldale residents should not flush “flushable” wipes in their toilets.
The wipes are clogging the borough’s sewer lines, Councilman Mike Radocha recently told council.
“We have an issue on Early Avenue and it’s ongoing with constant calls,” he said.
The line was cleaned earlier this month and a camera was sent in to inspect it.
“Apparently (people) are still using wipes, even though it says ‘flushable,’ ” Radocha said.
He noted that the borough’s sewer lines are constructed of 3-foot terra cotta pipes with “bells” on them. Wipes are getting caught on the bells, he said.
“We are going to start charging because we can tell now — especially on the lines we flushed — where the laterals are and where they are coming from,” Radocha said.
Residents who live in the area of the 200 block of West Early Avenue were notified earlier this month about the problem with the wipes.
But it wasn’t just wipes clogging the lines, according to the letter from borough Secretary Kim Gavornik.
“It was discovered that the lines were full of wipes, paper towels, shirts, sandwiches, etc., all the things that should not be in our sewer lines,” she wrote.
Gavornik noted that the cost of the camera and clearing the lines is expensive for all taxpayers.
“If the borough needs to have the line cleaned again, they will camera the lines to see where the items that are not to be in our system are coming from and you will be responsible for the cost of clearing the lines, which could include borough workers’ time,” she wrote.
Gavornik also advised against flushing feminine products and trash.
“It is going to be costly to fix and somebody is going to end up paying,” Radocha said. “We’re done. We had so much trouble in that alley, it’s unreal.”
