Nolehi falls to Central Catholic

ORWIGSBURG — Northern Lehigh’s baseball team stood at the precipice, facing a tall task from start to finish.

Few expected the Bulldogs to contend for a District 11 Class 2A championship — except those inside the program.

Still, the Bulldogs proved to be junkyard tough, advancing to the district semifinals before falling to one of the tournament favorites, Allentown Central Catholic, 11-4, Sunday at Blue Mountain High School’s Allen Greenawalt Stadium.

Northern Lehigh had its chances early. The Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 first-inning lead and continued to make plays throughout the game. Even after Central Catholic tied the score in the third inning, Northern Lehigh never appeared rattled.

“No one expected much from this team, no media outlets, no one other than us,” fourth-year manager Gerald Kresge said.

Pitching troubles in the middle innings ultimately proved costly, but the game remained within reach after the Vikings erased a 1-0 deficit and built a 4-1 lead. Northern Lehigh answered with a solo run to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Bulldogs struck first in the opening inning. Leadoff hitter Brayden Buskirk walked, advanced to second on Avery Kabrick’s bunt and scored on Parker Schaffer’s RBI groundout.

Northern Lehigh threatened again in the third inning when Buskirk singled and advanced to second with two outs. But Central Catholic shortstop Nicholas VanFleet snared a hard-hit liner off Schaffer’s bat to end the rally.

The Vikings tied the game later in the inning after Nolan Young walked and Andrew Bowser delivered a two-out RBI single.

Momentum shifted to Central Catholic in the fourth inning when the Vikings erupted for four runs, chasing Schaffer from the mound as he struggled with command.

“It was a tough strike zone,” Kresge said in defense of his pitcher. “(He) got limited to everything ... limited to fastballs and that’s (not) Parker, who has four pitches ... yeah, we really got limited today to fastballs.”

Central Catholic took advantage.

“We had a long layoff, and had only a three-inning scrimmage with the weather,” Vikings manager Anthony Sorrentino said. “But we struggled, and their pitcher did a pretty good job early before we finally hit the ball with any (consistency).”

The Vikings’ fourth-inning rally featured singles by both Young and VanFleet, an RBI double from Brader Butz, and a two-run single by Bowser, who finished with five RBIs.

Northern Lehigh answered with a run in the fifth when Pablo Rivera singled and later scored on Buskirk’s RBI single, trimming the deficit to 5-2.

Central Catholic responded with five runs on six hits in the fifth inning. The big blow came on Bowser’s three-run double. The Vikings added another run in the sixth with the help of four walks.

Northern Lehigh mounted one final rally in the seventh. Landon Cougle doubled deep to left-center field, scoring fellow senior Christopher Vargas, who opened the inning with a single. Jayden Christman later added an RBI single to account for the final score.

“The kids had a great offseason, and it paid off,” Kresge said while looking ahead to next spring. “This (season) was not a surprise to us … our goal was to win it (district). We (may have) come up short of that goal, but they have nothing to hang their heads about.”

BIDDING ADIEU ... Northern Lehigh graduates six seniors — Dougherty, Cougle, Christman, Christopher Vargas, Coy Caubert and Buskirk — but appears to have a strong foundation in place for 2027. TOUGH OUT ... Central Catholic had two outs and nobody on base in the fourth inning before rallying for four runs. The inning provided a major momentum swing in a game that had been tightly contested. BIG PLAYS ... Northern Lehigh shortstop Rivera made a standout defensive play in the third inning, charging a hard ground ball and throwing out Jake Strobl. Vargas also robbed Strobl of a hit in the fourth inning with a running catch in center field. Northern Lehigh 100 010 2 - 4 7 0
