The Lehighton United Veterans Organization has announced the schedule for Memorial Day services.

The main service is at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the upper Lehighton Park Amphitheater.

In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held inside at Zion United Church of Christ, Second and Iron streets.

Commander Kevin Long said the speaker will be retired Lt. Col. Linda Ettl, U.S. Army National Guard, U.S. Army Reserves.

“We met when I transferred to 213th ASG in 1993 for the position of Physical Security NCO,” said Long, who added the position went away. Long was then “transferred to the (Special Operations Detachment) section where I remained until my retirement in 2001. I was part of this section when deployed along with (Ettl) for Operation Joint Endeavor/Joint Guard.”

Long said Ettl served over 30 years between the Army National Guard and Army Reserves.

Ettl, a native of Greenawalds Section of Allentown, enlisted in 1979.

Ettl attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Indiantown Gap, earning her commission as a second lieutenant in 1984.

She served in a variety of leadership roles within the Adjutant General Branch including with the 213th Area Support Group and the 166th Regt Officer Candidate School.

Ettl retired in 2014.

Her military service included deployments to Taszar, Hungary in support of NATO Operations “Operation Join Endeavor/Joint Guard” from 1996-1997 and support operations of “Operation New Dawn” in Iraq.

In addition to her military career, Ettl earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Kutztown University, working as a private duty nurse caring for children with genetic disorders, until retiring in 2020.
