Slatington applies for park grant
Slatington Borough Council is seeking a state grant for the West End Park renovation.
Borough Manager Roy Hambrecht reported the grant was submitted on April 29 for Community Conservation Partnership Program funds from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
“It will be in two phases,” he said. “In 2027, the total is $124,000; we will get $100,000. Then in 2028, the total is $174,000; we will get $100,000.”
For Roosevelt Park, Hambrecht is working on numbers for a state Greenways grant.
“I have been getting prices for playground equipment,” he said.
In other business, Abigail Bartels of Acela Engineering asked the council to approve the 2026 project of South Street and East Washington Street. It is currently with Lehigh County Planning.
Council approved the motion.
Council also discussed the 100 Steps. The borough received a $400,000 grant three years ago to repair the approximately century-old steps at 213 Hill St. The steep walkway allows pedestrians to travel between Hill Street and surrounding areas.
Officials said the steps are cracked and chipped, and that the project will also address structural issues with adjacent retaining walls. The cost estimate was from four years ago. It will be more now.
“Maybe try to go back to the grant people and try for more money to make up the difference,” council member David Schnaars said.
Council agreed that would be a good idea.
Council also held an executive session and then announced it would authorize the solicitor to draft a revision to current ordinances to give the mayor oversight of the fire department.
During the public comment period, Kris Burek asked about Fourth Street.
“When you turn on Grove Street, then on Fourth, there are not any signs.” she said. “We need streetlights on the 1200 block of Fourth Street. It’s so dark.”
Council reported the borough is accepting letters of interest for the Economic Development and Town Beautification Board (two-year and four-year terms). The board will have five members.
The council also approved:
• Denise Martinez of Caring DAM Hearts to conduct the organization’s 10th annual Project Warm & Cozy and the fourth annual Adopt-a-Tree fundraiser at Victory Park on Dec. 5 from 2-6 p.m.
• Caring Hearts to conduct The Park & Food Truck Festival on Sept. 19, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Victory Park.
• $90,612.90 for partial payment to G&B Construction for the first part of Fifth Street.
• $11,120 for additional costs for Lab Services of Toxic Reduction Evaluation.
• Property adjacent to the Rentschler’s body shop to Rentschler’s was tabled to executive session.
