Cuevas winner of Democratic nomination in Lehigh

Voters in the 187th Legislative District of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives had a challenged vote facing them in Tuesday’s primary election.

That was for the Democratic nomination in the area that includes parts of Lehigh County, including the townships of Heidelberg, Lynn, Washington and Weisenberg.

Rachel Cuevas, a human resources professional, defeated Geoffrey S. Whitcomb, a pastor and Southwest Middle School music teacher, by a 3,343 to 1,505 vote.

The win sends Cuevas against Republican Rep. Gary Day, who was unopposed Tuesday and received 3,808 token votes.

Two incumbent Republicans saw their Democratic challenger officially gain nominations after being unopposed in the primary.

122nd District

Republican Rep. Doyle Heffley was unopposed on the GOP side Tuesday and there was no Democratic candidate. Heffley, who received 4,359 token votes, and Christian Bartulovich, a Penn Forest Township supervisor, sought Democratic write-in votes to win that nomination. A total of 100 write-in votes, or more than the other candidate if both exceed 100, is required to secure the nomination.

The county election bureau site lists 1,164 write-in votes that need to be checked ton determining a winner of the Democratic nomination. That won’t be decided until the bureau conducts a canvas of the vote.

124th District

Rep. Jamie Barton will again face Democrat Tina Burns of Tamaqua, a health care industry worker whom he defeated in 2024.

Barton collected 4,987 complimentary votes, while Burns tallied 3,051 token votes.

The district includes parts of Berks County and parts of Schuylkill County, including the townships of Delano, East Brunswick, Rush, Ryan, Schuylkill, South Manheim, Walker, West Brunswick and West Penn, and the boroughs of Auburn, Coaldale, Deer Lake, Landingville, New Ringgold, Orwigsburg, Port Clinton and Tamaqua.

183rd District

Republican Rep. Zach Mako was unopposed on that side in the primary, as was his future fall opponent, Democrat Deirdre Kamber-Todd, an attorney and small business owner from Schnecksville.

Mako tallied 4,113 complimentary votes. Kamber-Todd received 5,013 from voters in parts of Lehigh County, including the townships of Lowhill and North Whitehall and the borough of Slatington, and parts of Northampton County, including Lehigh Township and Walnutport.

176th District

Rep. Jack Rader, who represents the district that includes parts of Monroe County, including the townships of Chestnuthill, Eldred, Hamilton, Jackson, Polk, Ross, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock, had no opposition Tuesday within his party. He received 3,591 token votes Tuesday. There was no Democratic candidate.

The county’s election bureau site says there were 1,673 write-in votes on the Democratic side that need to be examined to determine if a winner if that nomination is declared.
