Lansford OKs ex-cop’s settlement

Lansford Borough Council on Wednesday moved to settle a federal lawsuit filed by a former part-time police officer.

Council split 4-3 to approve the settlement proposed at the April 9 arbitration hearing in the lawsuit filed by Gilbert Diaz against the borough.

Voting against the settlement were council members Gwyneth Collevechio, Bruce Markovich and Michele Bartek, all of whom were not named individually in the action against the borough.

Diaz, who worked as a part-time borough officer for about six months, claimed he was deprived of his due process rights when he was removed from the schedule in April 2025.

Council voted against holding a hearing with Diaz to allow him to present his side in August 2025.

Diaz sued the borough and along with Councilmen Joseph Butrie and Jack Soberick, and former council members George Gilbert and Jennifer Staines, who voted against holding a hearing.

Also named as defendants in the suit were former Mayor Hugh Vrablic and police Sgt. Shawn Nunemacher.

Council did not publicly discuss the terms of the settlement or an amount, but did meet in executive session with attorneys for an hour before the council meeting to discuss the settlement.

Council also had other closed-door sessions before Wednesday to discuss this lawsuit and potential settlement.
