May 13, 1978 — Palmerton’s Thomasine Wargo and Slatington’s Sue Jones both win three events at the Centennial League championships held at East Stroudsburg State College’s stadium. Wargo’s first-place finishes come in the jumps, including a new league mark in the triple jump with a mark of 32-9 1/2. She also captures the high jump (4-11) and long jump (16-2 3/4). Jones shines in the throws, and sets two new meet records, those being in the javelin (100-2) and the discus (110-7). She also earns gold in the shot put (35-11 1/4). Other area athletes to win multiple events include Slatington’s Barry Eckhart (mile, two-mile) and Palmerton’s Matt Shupp (220, 440).
