East Penn to host Youth Fishing Derby

East Penn Township will welcome families, young anglers, veterans and community partners to Lizard Creek from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for the America250 Youth Fishing Derby, a commemorative event blending outdoor recreation with local Revolutionary era history and environmental stewardship.

The derby is open to children ages 1 to 15, with a $10 registration fee helping to offset fish stocking and event support costs. Organizers emphasized that the goal of the event is to connect youth with both the natural environment and the region’s deep historical roots.

The ceremony will open with remarks linking the day’s activities to a pivotal moment in the nation’s founding. “Today our youth cast their lines exactly 250 years after John Adams penned the preamble urging the United Colonies to begin separating from Great Britain,” the official noted, underscoring the event’s America250 significance.

The Lehighton American Legion Post 314 Honor Guard will present the colors, followed by the national anthem and a moment of silence in recognition of Armed Forces Day.
