Zion UCC to present Music Sunday on Mother’s Day
Zion United Church of Christ, Second and Iron streets in Lehighton, invites the community to a special Music Sunday service at 10:15 a.m. on Mother’s Day.
This uplifting celebration of worship through music is free and all mothers in attendance will receive a special gift courtesy of Zion’s Chancel Choir.
Centered around the theme “And So We Sing,” the service will explore the many ways music allows us to express faith, build community, and respond to God’s presence in our lives. At a time when many church choirs are shrinking, Zion’s choir is experiencing encouraging growth — bringing renewed energy, commitment and joy to the congregation’s worship.
The morning will feature a rich variety of musical offerings from choir, bell choir, and instrumentalists. The choir will present “And So We Sing!” by Joseph M. Martin, a vibrant and energetic anthem that captures the heart of why we make music together. This anthem will feature a soaring descant by Casi Reichard and Robin Grototolski, adding brilliance and excitement to the final moments of the piece.
The anthem “So Be It” by Heather Sorenson offers a more reflective moment, expressing a prayerful response of trust and surrender. Through its message, the simple phrase “so be it” becomes a declaration of faith, inviting listeners to say “yes” to God’s will. Laura Reichard will present a solo and preside over Zion’s historic Austin Organ, providing accompaniment throughout the service.
The joyful anthem “Happy Day” brings a burst of celebration to the service, proclaiming the transforming power of faith with energy and enthusiasm. It reflects the moment when sorrow gives way to joy and invites all to share in the excitement of new life and hope.
The bell choir will offer two meaningful selections. “The Stand,” originally by Hillsong United, is a powerful expression of awe and devotion, reminding us that when we reflect on God’s love, our response is to stand in worship and offer our lives in praise. In contrast, “Lord, I Need You” provides a tender and intimate moment of prayer, expressing our daily dependence on God’s grace and guidance.
Congregational singing will be a central part of the service, with hymns that celebrate praise, unity, and the joy of making music together. These hymns will be accompanied by Zion’s Sanctuary Sounds instrumental group.
Scripture for the service will include Psalm 98:1-6, a joyful call to “sing a new song” and make a joyful noise to the Lord. This passage beautifully reflects the spirit of the day, inviting all creation — voices and instruments alike — to join in praise. Readers for the service are all members of the choir, further highlighting the central role of music ministry throughout the morning.
The music ministry at Zion UCC is under the leadership of Bradly R. Cressley, who also directs the Zion Opera Workshop.
