East Penn approves $193K for road work

East Penn Township supervisors approved more than $193,000 in roadwork contracts this week, including a seal-coating project and the purchase of road materials.

Supervisors awarded Asphalt Maintenance Solution LLC a $114,661.26 contract to seal coat multiple township roads, including Dieters Hill to West Bowmans Road to the township boundary; Craig Road to Dieters Hill to the dead end; Hidden Spur to West Bowmans to the dead end; North Kittatinny Road to Route 895 to the dead end; South Kittatinny Road to Route 895 to Lizard Creek to East Sunset; and Holiday Road to Route 895 to the dead end.

Supervisors also approved a $79,025 contract with New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. Inc. for road materials for projects including leveling and base repair work on Smithlane Road from Route 3011 to West Bowmans Road, the Pinoak Road cul-de-sac, Wertman Hollow Road and Stone Mountain Road.

In other business, supervisors approved the treasurer’s report for March 1 through March 31 and approved invoices for payment.

The board also tabled a discussion on transferring $100,000 from the township’s capital account to Mauch Chunk Trust Wealth Management in order to earn more interest.

Supervisor William Schwab questioned whether the funds would be insured.

“I don’t think they are insured,” Schwab said.

Township Manager Jillyan Sterling said she would look into the matter.

“I will have to check on that,” Sterling said.

A road report for March, submitted by Roadmaster Brandon Bradford, noted township crews completed a remodel of the community center office and storage room, cold patched potholes, cleaned up trees and debris from a windstorm, opened drains throughout the township, regraded and reshaped Blue Mountain Road, swept anti-skid from roads, trimmed and widened the D&L Trail using a boom mower, and removed winter equipment from trucks. One truck remains equipped for salt if needed.

Bradford also reported normal equipment maintenance and repairs were completed.

Supervisors also reported the township’s egg hunt drew about 60 children. A fishing derby is planned, with a date to be announced.

An electronics recycling event is scheduled for April 22 from 2 to 5 p.m., or until the truck is full, at the community center at 403 Blue Mountain Road.

Supervisors Gary Kuehner and Keith House were absent. No residents attended the meeting, which lasted about 15 minutes.
