West Penn doubles fees on false alarms

West Penn Township supervisors adopted an ordinance that doubles the fees imposed on those who call in false alarms.

Under the ordinance, offenders will now be charged $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense and $300 for the third offense.

The ordinance changes the time frame from a calendar year to a 12-month period.

The township’s police and fire departments reviewed the changes to the ordinance before it was unanimously adopted by supervisors Monday.

In keeping with ordinances, supervisors will consider adopting a full solar ordinance.

The recommendation was made by the township’s Planning Commission.

According to township solicitor Paul Datte, the township has an ordinance regulating solar fields, but it mostly touches on decommissioning and financial security.

“I think there are things that could be in there that are not in there,” Datte said.

Also during Monday’s meeting, supervisors discussed whether a Facebook page should be started for the West Penn, J.E. Morgan and Atlas Park Commission.

“Some say that they want a Facebook page and some are saying no,” supervisors’ Chairman Tony Prudenti said of commission members.

Prudenti surveyed audience members, some of whom said that not all residents are active on Facebook.

Prudenti agreed, noting that he is not active with social media.

One resident suggested revamping the township’s website to include information about parks.

Supervisor Tom Ackerman suggested meeting with the parks commission to gather input.
