‘Summer of Sisterhood’ camps not just for Girl Scouts

As part of its “Summer of Sisterhood” programming, Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania invites girls to experience summer at two of its scenic camp properties in Lehigh and Schuylkill counties, Camp Mountain House and Camp Wood Haven.

Involvement in Girl Scouts is not a requirement for participation, and all girls in kindergarten through 12th grade are encouraged to register.

At each camp, girls experience a tech-free environment that promotes problem-solving, encourages new challenges and fosters friendship through activities ranging from swimming to outdoor cooking. Camp Wood Haven and Camp Mountain House offer a variety of experiential learning opportunities.

“Summer camp is where girls build confidence, discover new interests and form lasting friendships in a supportive, empowering environment,” said Kim E. Fraites-Dow, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. “At our camps, every activity is designed to encourage curiosity, independence and a sense of belonging.”

Running from June 21 through Aug. 7, Camp Wood Haven offers seven one-week overnight programs for youth in grades 1 through 12. Founded in 1954, Camp Wood Haven is located at the base of Blue Mountain in Schuylkill County, near the Appalachian Trail. Campers can experience short hikes, horseback riding, outdoor cooking, swimming and the Tree Element, a high ropes course.

Camp Mountain House offers eight weeks of day camp for campers entering grades 1 through 10. Founded in 1942, Camp Mountain House is nestled in a wooded sanctuary on South Mountain in Lehigh County, just outside of Allentown. For more than 80 years, Camp Mountain House has offered experiential learning for girls through programs such as greenhouse gardening, archery, arts and crafts, low ropes and amphitheater performances.

Camp Mountain House runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended care hours available before and after camp. Camp Wood Haven offers full, half and multiweek camps. New this summer at Camp Wood Haven is the Overnight Starter Camp that supports young campers entering grades 1 through 3 on their first overnight camping adventure. Overnight Starter Camp at Camp Wood Haven offers full and half-week options.

Accredited by the American Camp Association, all Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania summer camps meet extensive safety and programming requirements.
