N. Schuylkill rolls past Tamaqua
FOUNTAIN SPRINGS — At times, Tamaqua’s softball team looked out of sync.
It struggled against a high-powered North Schuylkill club, falling 14-0 in five innings in a Schuylkill League Division 1 game Tuesday.
North Schuylkill collected 12 hits and showed balance throughout the lineup. Junior catcher Gianna Capone led the way, going 4-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.
Lyza Holmes had two hits — including a double — and scored three runs, Brigid Flynn added two hits and two RBIs, and Mallorie Crocker finished with two hits and three RBIs for the Spartans, who also drew nine walks.
“As you can see, we’re pretty balanced at the plate,” North Schuylkill coach Jack Flynn said. “Right now we’re in a fight with Blue Mountain in our division, and I thought our pitcher Peyton Miscannon gave us a solid effort. She’s pitching with more confidence.”
Flynn also credited his team’s approach at the plate.
“They’ve got two really good pitchers, and for us to go out and hit the ball where it was pitched and take pitches showed me a lot,” he said.
North Schuylkill took control early, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Spartans capitalized on an error for the game’s first run before Capone followed with an RBI single.
The Spartans broke the game open in the second inning, scoring eight runs on four hits while sending 14 batters to the plate.
Flynn delivered a two-run single, Capone added a two-run double, and Crocker and Holmes each drove in a run.
North Schuylkill also took advantage of control issues, drawing multiple walks — including four straight to start the inning — and two with the bases loaded.
“When things start rolling, it goes downhill fast,” Tamaqua coach Tony Zancofsky said. “They’re a very good hitting team. They did the little things you need to win.”
North Schuylkill added four more runs in the fourth inning. The Spartans took advantage of a dropped third strike and an error to score the first run of the frame, before Capone added an RBI single. Crocker capped the inning with a two-run single.
Miscannon was in control throughout, allowing just two hits over five innings while striking out four and walking one.
Ceanna Gormley and Paige Bumbulsky accounted for Tamaqua’s hits, with Gormley breaking up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the third inning.
“I thought our pitching was going to carry us, but right now we’re still working through some things to get better results,” Zancofsky said. “Whoever we have in the circle, we’re just focused on improving.”
WHAT’S UP … Tamaqua, expected to contend in the division, has struggled early despite returning experience. North Schuylkill’s only loss came to unbeaten Blue Mountain (8-0; 5-0) earlier this season on March 26.
BY THE NUMBERS … Miscannon threw 70 pitches, 48 for strikes, over five innings.
