Two vacancies now on Weissport council

Weissport Borough Council member Andrew Hottenstein submitted a letter of resignation at the council meeting Monday evening.

“I am submitting my resignation as of April 11, 2026, due to personal reasons at home and at work. I do not have the time to put into the community at this time. Thank you for the time I did have on Council,” Council President Arland Moyer Sr. read from the letter at Monday’s meeting. Hottenstein was present.

Hottenstein’s resignation is for the Weissport Borough Council and the Weissport Municipal Authority.

The council will have two council seats vacant when Hottenstein’s resignation takes effect Saturday. Shelley Fisher had resigned from council last month.

Borough council does have a quorum, with three council members — Arland Moyer, Bill Hartzell and Tim Rehrig — and can continue to conduct business. Weissport needs at least three board members to continue to operate.

In March 2025, the resignation of three council members caused the Weissport Borough Council to halt all borough business until May, when the courts intervened to appoint a third council member.

Weissport is also looking for a tax collector and a police officer.

The Carbon County treasurer, Kevin Zelienka, will be collecting Weissport’s real estate taxes for the calendar year 2026. Council will still need to find a tax collector to begin in 2027. The Lehighton Area School District will collect the school taxes for Weissport.

Applicants for tax collector must be residents of Weissport Borough, be registered to vote and be bondable

Weissport Mayor Jodi Sonon is still talking with Lehighton Mayor Ryan Saunders regarding having the Lehighton Police Department patrol Weissport Borough.

“I did talk to the mayor of Lehighton, and we are trying to come up with a solution,” Sonon explained. “Right now, he has several officers out with injuries. As soon as they come back, hopefully we can decide what we’re going to do.”
