Lehigh Township supervisors

Lehigh Township solicitor Dave Backenstoe reported on a zoning hearing involving an Airbnb on Bishops Place, citing issues including excessive noise, large party attendance and other complaints.

“Zoning Officer (Roxann) Colfer and I had a successful zoning hearing about the Airbnb at 631 Bishops Place on Sept. 27, 2025, for excessive noise, 200 people, speeding, underage drinking and trespassing,” Backenstoe said.

He said multiple police departments were called to assist. The Airbnb is located in an area not zoned for short-term rentals but was grandfathered in because it existed before the township’s newer ordinance. Backenstoe said the property was served with a written cease-and-desist order and has 45 days to comply and 30 days to appeal.

During public comment, residents asked about the status of the Northampton Area School District’s refusal to pay the fire tax. Residents said they believe it is unfair because churches and nonprofits in the township must pay.

Backenstoe said the board would address the matter.

“In executive session the board at the appropriate time will take action,” he said.

Residents also asked about replacing the sign at the township building.

Board President Mike Jones said the township is still waiting to hear about a grant application.

“We have not heard about the grant we applied for to replace it,” Jones said. “The sign will be $30,000.”

Supervisors held an executive session to discuss personnel matters.
