Lansford OKs roof repairs

Lansford Borough Council moved ahead with building and equipment repairs during a special meeting Thursday.

Council approved a $6,500 quote from Francis Hutta for a roof repair for the borough building. Flashing needs to be replaced around the chimney as well as work on the chimney itself.

A leak has caused damage and cracks inside the building, Councilwoman Michele Bartek pointed out.

Council also approved a $3,630.21 estimate from Lowe & Moyer Garage Inc. in Fogelsville for emergency repairs to the 2014 International 700 truck.

In other business, council:

• Approved a special event form from Lansford Alive for the Summer Concert Series at John F. Kennedy Park for the following dates: June 7, 14, 21 and 28; July 5, 12, 19 and 26; Aug. 2, 9, 16 and 23; and Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The concerts are from 6-8 p.m. in summer months and from 5-7 p.m. in September.

• Ratified sending a letter of support for the sewer authority’s mechanical bar screen system improvement project.

• Advertised for material bids for street repairs and approved a resolution for a price adjustment of bituminous materials for small quantities. Treasurer Maria Ahner said the moves go hand in hand. The borough paid $85 a ton last year, and a 10% increase is expected this year.

• Referred snow ban signs to the public works committee for review and recommendation on posting the signs. There had been debate on signs, the wording, their effectiveness, and cost previously.

Councilman Joe Butrie said the new signs were paid for with insurance claim funds from the borough garage fire, so they cost the borough nothing. Mayor Denise Leibensperger said that those funds are still taxpayer dollars.

• Approved Dennis Anderson to work up to 600 hours as a part-time seasonal employee at $20 an hour, as needed to begin as soon as possible under the direction of the Public Works Department.

Council members noted that over 400 hours he would need to join the union and a waiver would be needed. Anderson has worked as a seasonal employee for years and does not want to join the union, they noted.

• Agreed to have to the code officer send a letter to the American Legion regarding its responsibility to repair damage to a handicapped sidewalk at West Ridge and Tunnel streets.
