Weatherly clears way for street paving

Weatherly Borough Council on Monday awarded a contract to pave North Street this year.

Council awarded a contract for $39,463.38 to the H&K Group, the apparent low bidder on the project to pave North Street from Louisa Street to Allen Avenue.

Other bidders included Lehigh Asphalt, Pennsy Supply, New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. and Wayco Inc. The bids ranged from H&K’s low bid of $39,463 to a high of $59,176.

The borough also heard from Jared Frye of the Weatherly Hillclimb Association regarding a fireworks display the association would like to host on June 6.

A proposed location to set off the display would be the lot adjacent to the borough building, he said after speaking with Tom Breznitsky, fire chief and borough EMA coordinator.

That would allow for parking and visibility at the borough building as well as the trail parking lot, in addition to on-street parking, and also allow people in the hillclimb pit area to see the display, Frye said.

The association along with sponsors and donors would fund the display, and they are asking for borough approval as well as police and fire support.

Council President Michael Bellizia said that borough will let the association know what approvals would be needed.

In other business, council approved a resolution for signatory authority with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, which allows Police Chief Michael Bogart to get crash reports and other paperwork from the state.

Council also granted a request from the tax collector to dispose of records in accordance with the law. The records will be shredded, Manager Tracy Grover said.

Councilman Joe Cyburt also shared his appreciation for the work that Grover has done in the past three months since becoming borough manager.

“We’ve had a rough start to the year, the weather, all the breakdowns, and if we’d had a mild winter, things would have been a lot different, your job would have been a lot easier,” Cyburt told her. “Considering everything you’ve been through for two and half months, I think you’ve handled yourself well and I think you’re doing a great job with the employees.”
