Outdoor expo offers recreation choices

Whether you were looking for information about hunting and fishing, local parks, gardening, saving for college or E-bikes, it was available at the 12th annual outdoor expo sponsored by state Rep. Doyle Hefley and state Sen. Dave Argall.

“It’s a great event with so many organizations in the community, including DCNR, outdoor hunting clubs and ski resorts. It’s a great expo for people who like the outdoors,” Hefley said.

Master Gardeners were available to help those with gardening questions.

They are offering a new program called “Seed to Supper,” a free six-week class teaching how to grow vegetables and eat healthy. The program will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 15 at the Lehighton library.

Friends of Beltzville State Park were there to explain some of the things they do for the park, including road cleanup, raising money, including for a new playground, maintaining a pollinator garden and plastic recycling.

The Friends group has collected over 9,000 pounds of plastics which are turned into benches. So far the park has three benches and has donated six to local nonprofits.

For those looking for a little more of a thrill, the Weatherly Hill climb will be held on June 6 and 7 and Sept. 19 and 20. This event is sanctioned through the sports car club and has 90 to 100 drivers racing on the public road through Weatherly.

“If you’ve never been there, you’ll love it,” Dave Demaree from Weatherly said, adding that it’s exciting to hear the cars all weekend of the races.

Respecting the land and water was the message shared by Beltzville Park Ranger Karen Hock. Hock noted that she was answering questions about boating and the park in general.

For the first time, water rescue dogs, Nixie and Kelby, were at the expo. Owners and trainers George and Kate Abraham explained, “We’re here to talk to the community and let them know that we’re here to help and give them some safety tips.”

Taylor Reber, 9, of Doylestown, was excited to learn that the dogs jump out of helicopters.

Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Rangers from Weiser State Forest Brian Derr and Craig Bressor explained that the Forest covers seven tracts. Maps were available for each tract.

To top off the opportunity to gather information about what is offered locally, the crowd was treated to a free lunch.
