Wild NW-Nazareth game is suspended
It’s rare to see Northwestern pitcher Emma Freeman get hit around in a game, but that and a couple other rarities occurred Friday afternoon when Northwestern and Nazareth tried to fit a softball game in before rains came to the area.
After playing through off and on light rain for most of the game a heavier, more consistent rain started to fall, and the umpires finally suspended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with Northwestern at the plate, trailing 14-13 with two runners on base and two outs.
Nazareth got a pair of grand slams, one from Kassandra Mazzarese-Zin and the other from Taylor Friel.
For Friel, the grand slam to center field in the top of the fifth was her second home run of the game. She launched a two-run home run in the first inning. She also walked and reached on an error.
The Tigers trailed 10-4 going to the bottom of the fourth inning before stringing together five hits — three singles and a pair of doubles — in a row. An error, a passed ball and another single in the inning plated six runs to tie the game. Natalie Conner had led off the third inning with a line drive solo home run to center field for Northwestern.
Northwestern also trailed 14-10 coming into their half of the fifth but were able to score three runs before the game was suspended.
No date was immediately set to complete the game.
