Woman hospitalized after Monday fire

A house fire Monday night in Slatington that began in a second-floor bedroom left a home uninhabitable and sent two residents to the hospital.

Fire Chief Justin Frable said the blaze was contained to the bedroom where it started, but the home at 139 Fifth St. sustained significant water and smoke damage.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

The Slatington Fire Department was dispatched at 9:45 p.m. Monday to a reported dwelling fire with possible entrapment. When Slatington Police Department arrived, officers encountered heavy smoke and helped a woman out of the residence.

Both the husband and wife were transported to a hospital, with the woman later admitted, Frable reported.

Multiple companies responded to the scene, including units from Lehigh Township, Walnutport, Neffs, Friedens, Emerald, Palmerton and Greenawalds.

Additional support came from Cascade Air 32 out of Woodlawn and Lehigh County 101 Rehab from Macungie. Ambulance crews from NOVA, Allentown, Northampton and Cetronia also assisted. Cyanide kits — used to treat carbon monoxide exposure from smoke inhalation — were administered to the residents.

Three cats were rescued from the home and given oxygen. Frable said the animals are doing well and are being temporarily housed at Waggin’ Tails Doggy Daycare until the family can reclaim them.

A firefighter was also injured after being bitten by a cat at the scene. He drove himself to the emergency room for evaluation.

Neighboring homes at 141 and 143 Fifth St. were not affected by the fire.
