ON THIS DATE MARCH 17, 1972

A Panther Valley High School senior was named champion of the 1972 Carbon County Girls’ Oratorical Contest held last night in the Lehighton Area High School auditorium.

Miss Cynthia Whitehead, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Whitehead of 159 E. Railroad St., Nesquehoning, was the winner of the contest with her oration of “They Stood Alone.”

Others participating in the contest and their orations were Colleen Man, Jim Thorpe, “Crime - Some Call It Dissent,” Wendy Bausman, Lehighton, “Happiness is Freedom” and Karen Jeppsen, Weatherly, “The Gift of Life.”

Judges for the competition were Attorney Richard Webb, Carbon County District Attorney John Deutsch and the Rev. Benton Zettlemoyer.
