A New Jersey man faces drug charges after state police say they found a large amount of cocaine during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Kidder Township.
Welinton Garcia-Moreta, 46, of Paterson, was stopped at 4:25 p.m. March 9 while driving west on I-80 after a trooper observed his vehicle repeatedly cross the white fog line and noticed that the rear window had extremely dark aftermarket tint.
During the stop near mile marker 281.5, the trooper spoke with Garcia-Moreta, who was the vehicle’s only occupant. He was initially issued a written warning for the traffic violations.
During the interaction, the trooper noticed signs that led him to suspect possible criminal activity and asked Garcia-Moreta for permission to search the vehicle. Garcia-Moreta agreed.
A search of the car turned up a clear plastic bag in the trunk containing a bulk amount of suspected cocaine along with an orange digital scale. Another small bag of suspected cocaine was found in the sunglasses compartment near the sun visor. On the front passenger seat, the trooper also found five black elastic bands commonly used to bundle cash and narcotics.
The suspected cocaine later tested positive in a field test and weighed about 211 grams, police said.
Garcia-Moreta was taken to the state police barracks at Fern Ridge and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He is being held in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly.
