Summit Hill to celebrate 250th on July 4
Summit Hill will celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States on July 4 with events to be held in the Hilltop Community Center.
Plans for the celebration were unveiled during a meeting of Summit Hill Borough Council this week.
Kathy Gieniec, chairman of the Summit Hill Recreation Commission, told the council there will be free entertainment, face painting, hula hoops, cornhole, picnic food, a basket raffle and birthday cake.
She said donations are being sought for the basket raffle and the dessert table.
Activities will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Musical entertainment will begin at 1 p.m. with the band Stoneheart performing in the Ludlow Park gazebo, weather permitting.
From 3 to 6 p.m., the Coal Town Blue Band will be on stage.
Several special surprise guests will be attending, said Gieniec.
At 3 p.m., attendees will be led in the singing of “Happy Birthday” to America, with a birthday cake lit with candles. It is at this time the special guests will arrive.
Gieniec said, “There will be dancing and photo props on the tables for photos with backdrops on the walls around the hall. Backdrops will include country/western, patriotic and tropical themes.
Anyone wanting to donate baskets or desserts, or to help in any other way, can contact Gieniec or any officer of the Recreation Commission.
Other officers are Cheryl Schoch, vice president; Milissa Crampsie, treasurer; and Ruthann Christopher, secretary.
Other recreation activities
Gieniec said several other events are planned by the Recreation Commission.
The annual Easter Egg hunt will be held at 11 a.m. on March 28 at the Ludlow Park gazebo. The rain date is April 4.
The Commission will host a Psyanky egg class at 6 p.m. on March 24, in the Hilltop Community Center. There is a $25 per person fee.
A spring flowers paint and sip will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 24 at a cost of $35 per person. Gieniec said this event is open for beginners and advanced people.
The Recreation Commission also will host a Memorial Day breakfast prior to the borough’s annual Memorial Day events, during which there will be breakfast, water, juice, coffee and various food items available.
