One dead after standoff in New Philadelphia

One man is dead after a standoff Monday with police in New Philadelphia, Schuylkill County.

State Tpr. Ethan Brownback of Troop L said state police from Frackville were called to a residence on Valley Street about 10 a.m. for a domestic incident.

When troopers arrived, they entered the residence and encountered a man who fired several shots at them.

Brownback said troopers were able to exit the residence safely and set up a perimeter with the help of multiple local police departments. Fire police assisted to block off access to the area.

The state police SERT team was called and made multiple attempts to take the suspect into custody.

Brownback said at 1:45 p.m. SERT members entered the residence and found the suspect dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He stressed that this was an isolated incident, with no threat to the public. No one else was inside the residence.

No law enforcement members were injured.
