Nesquehoning planning milestone celebrations
Nesquehoning continues its planning for the upcoming America250PA celebrations.
On Friday, the historical society announced that a meeting for the planning will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Nesquehoning Recreation Center, West Railroad Street.
The Nesquehoning Historical Society and Nesquehoning Recreation Commission are co-sponsoring the celebrations.
“We are celebrating not only one but two huge milestones — Nesquehoning’s 202nd Founding and America’s 250th Anniversary,” Lois Kuba, president of the historical society, posted.
Events leading up to the June 13 grand celebration in the borough kick off at 6 p.m. on March 30 with a local historian, Vince Hydro, holding a talk about “The History of Nesquehoning: Part 1” at the historical society museum. The same presentation will also be held at 1 p.m. on April 4.
On May 18, local musician Dave Matsinko will present a musical program “A Journey Through 250 Years of American Patriotic Music” at 6 p.m. at the historical society.
He continues with another musical program, “Traditional Folk Stories and Ballads of the Anthracite Coal Region.”
Kuba said that to kick off the weekend for the June 13 celebration, the Cressona Band will perform for the community at 7 p.m. on June 12 at the Nesquehoning Little League Field.
All programs are free, but donations are accepted.
On the day of the grand celebration, it kicks off with a boroughwide parade.
“We want this parade to ‘showcase’ the pride we have in our little town of Nesquehoning,” Kuba wrote. “This can be a fantastic event like so many of us remember the bicentennial of 1976 was and we can’t do this without you.”
A festival along West Railroad Street, starting at the recreation center, will follow the parade. Events will include cake walks, arm wrestling contests and plenty of food and kids activities.
The night will conclude with a fireworks display.
Everyone is invited to participate in the planning meeting or sign up to walk in the parade.
