Daniel W. Jones, 59, of White Haven, and Christopher Elsner, 43, of Sidney Valley, New York, were injured in a five- vehicle pileup at 7:26 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 81 in Delano Township.
State police at the Frackville barracks said they were transported by personnel from the Lehigh Valley Health Network EMS corps to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-East, Pottsville.
They said the crashes occurred when the five vehicles were southbound. They said Jones was driving a 2019 Jeep Cherokee when he lost control on a slight left curve in the roadway due to sudden weather conditions. They said the vehicle veered off the shoulder of the road and overturned, coming to rest on its driver’s side.
Police said Daniel J. Dougal, 47, of Nanticoke, driving a 2018 Honda Accord, attempted to slow down for the crash and the Accord was struck by a 2020 Infiniti driven by Elsner and a 2021 Kia Forte operated by Ottoniel A. Gonzalez Morales, 28, of Denver, North Carolina. After striking the Accord, the Infiniti struck a cement barrier and overturned onto its roof. Police said the Kia came to rest off the roadway against a cement barrier and was then struck by a 2016 Honda Civic driven by Clarisa Salvador, 25, of Hazleton.
They said the Jeep, Accord and Infiniti all had disabling damages and were towed from the scene while the Forte and Honda Civic had functional damages but were able to be driven from the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
