Turnpike incidents
State police at the Pocono barracks reported the following crashes and incidents that occurred on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike:
• Robert E. Schaffer-Neitz, 57, of Northumberland, had injuries of unknown severity in a two-vehicle crash at 4:57 p.m. Feb. 18 in Penn Forest Township.
Police said he was transported by personnel from the Lehighton Ambulance Association to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township.
They said he was driving a 2016 Kia Forte northbound during a period of steady rainfall that rendered the roadways wet and potentially hazardous. They said Schaffer-Neitz lost control of the car after driving through standing water, at which time it slid counterclockwise and hit a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia driven by Juan E. Villar Salcedo, 36, of Scranton, before striking a concrete barrier.
Police said the Forte had heavy damage and was towed from the scene, while the Freightliner had minor damage.
• No one was injured in a one-vehicle crash at 5:12 p.m. March 2 at mile marker 86.9 in Penn Forest Township.
Police said Brian D. Ocean, 43, of Hockessin, Delaware, was driving a 2023 Tesla northbound when it swerved onto the shoulder of the road and hit a guide rail.
• Catherine J. Lewis, 74, of Moscow, was uninjured in a one-vehicle crash at 7:51 a.m. March 3 at the Exit 87 on-ramp in Penn Forest Township.
Police said she was driving a 2021 Honda CRV when she attempted to turn left from Route 903 onto the ramp. The vehicle, police said, jumped a traffic island and hit a sign.
Police said the roadways were slippery due to freezing rain at the time.
• The driver of a 2017 Toyota Camry that police stopped for a suspended registration was found to be in possession of marijuana and was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Police did not provide the name or address of the driver of the car, which was stopped at 1:39 p.m. Feb. 27 at mile marker 89.5 in Kidder Township.
