Professor charged with indecent exposure
A Lehigh Carbon Community College professor is facing charges after two high school students reported seeing him without underwear during an online class meeting.
Timothy Shoemaker, 62, of Easton, has been charged with two counts of indecent exposure following a Sept. 19 Zoom meeting with students enrolled in his online English course.
According to Lehighton police, a 17-year-old Lehighton Area High School student reported that she joined a scheduled 8 a.m. Zoom meeting with Shoemaker to discuss a class project.
The student, who is dual enrolled in Lehigh Carbon Community College courses, said another student was also present in the meeting.
Shoemaker joined the meeting about 15 minutes late, apologizing and saying he had slept through his alarm.
The student told police Shoemaker stood up to retrieve his work computer, and she was shocked to see he was not wearing clothing below the waist. She said she briefly saw his bare buttocks as he walked away from the camera.
When he returned about a minute later, she said he was still unclothed from the waist down and she could see his genitals before he sat down and began discussing her project. She reported the incident to staff at Lehighton Area High School, who contacted her parents and officials at the college.
Police later identified the other student on the call as a 16-year-old girl from Panther Valley High School who was also enrolled in Shoemaker’s class. She told investigators she saw Shoemaker stand up and appear to be wearing no pants or underwear, exposing his buttocks. When he returned to the camera, she said she could also see his genitals before he sat down and continued the meeting.
Information obtained from Zoom confirmed a meeting took place at that time with four participants, though the platform did not retain video or audio from the session.
Lehigh Carbon Community College told police Shoemaker did not log into the meeting using a school computer or email account. However, records show he logged into the college’s computer system at 8:20 a.m., which investigators said matched the student’s account that he left briefly to retrieve a work computer.
During an interview with police Sept. 25, Shoemaker said he did not remember details from that morning but acknowledged he overslept and conducted two Zoom meetings before going back to sleep.
He said he believed he was wearing underwear during the meeting but noted he sometimes sleeps without pants or underwear. He also told police he contacted a mental health service afterward and said he had done something “wrong.”
Shoemaker is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 11 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz in Jim Thorpe.
