Letter to the editor: Trump accounts

A press release from Rep. Ryan Mackenzie printed in a recent issue touted “Trump Accounts” as aiding the next generation. According to the release, children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, are eligible to receive a thousand dollars in a savings account called a “Trump Account.”

I guess this is a good idea, but perhaps Rep. Mackenzie could clear up a few questions I have. Where is the money coming from? Does President Donald Trump himself personally pay for the accounts? I’m assuming he does, or why would they be called “Trump Accounts?”

Also, if the parents of these children lose their jobs because of tariffs and inflation and A.I. and need money for food and rent, will they also be able to tap into the accounts? That wasn’t clear.

Like so many of President Donald Trump’s ideas, it’s clear this one wasn’t thought through.
