WP chief: crew freed cars, saved home from fire

West Penn Township Police Chief Jason Lorah recognized some unlikely heroes during Monday’s township supervisors’ meeting.

They’re members of the township road crew, and Lorah said they recently saved a home from burning to the ground.

Not only that, he said, crew members helped free vehicles — including one used by police — that were trapped in snow earlier last month.

“Not all heroes drive ambulances, fire trucks and police vehicles,” Lorah said.

Lorah said that on Wednesday morning, a vehicle went up in flames on Ridge Road. The fire was edging close to a structure, he said.

“The road crew made way for the fire trucks, police, ambulance and everyone else to get to the fire,” Lorah said.

When police Lt. John Kaczmarczyk arrived, road crew member Justin Frable parked his truck in a field, jumped out and ran toward Kaczmarczyk.

The two hooked the burning car to a township police truck and dragged it away from the residence.

“The house was saved and to me, they are heroes,” Lorah said.

The house suffered “very minor” damage, Lorah said.

In addition, Lorah said the road crew helped police with vehicles that became paralyzed on Archery Club Road.

“Right after that storm, Archery Club Road drifted over really bad,” Lorah said. “We had multiple vehicles stuck. Thank goodness the road crew was out and plowing.”

Lorah phoned Roadmaster Jeremy Frable who arrived with his crew.

“Without the help, I never would have gotten those vehicles out. I really appreciate that,” Lorah said, noting that a police vehicle was among those that became temporarily disabled.

“I’d say it’s above the call of duty but they do stuff like that all the time,” said Tony Prudenti, supervisors’ chairman.
