Wife charged in 2019 homicide in Monroe
A woman is facing charges in the 2019 death of her husband at their Chestnuthill Township home.
Dolores Nieves, now 70, of Garwood, New Jersey, is charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault in the death of Caesar Nieves, 71, on Nov. 13, 2019, at the couple’s home in the 200 block of Springwood Court.
According to court documents, Monroe County 911 received a call from Dolores Nieves at 9:11 a.m. that day. She told dispatchers her husband had tried to kill her, shot himself and that she needed police and an ambulance. She also said he had struck her with a sledgehammer.
She was told to leave the house and wait outside.
About eight minutes later, she called again, asking why help had not arrived. She said she had the gun her husband used, that he was still breathing and trying to sit up, and that he had also tried to shoot her.
She told dispatchers she had removed both the gun and a sledgehammer from the home and was standing in her driveway. She also said there were additional firearms inside.
Her daughter came to the area and met her outside the home.
When troopers arrived, they were unable to make contact with Caesar Nieves inside the house.
Several hours later, a drone flown into the residence showed him lying on the kitchen floor. He was later pronounced dead by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
Investigators said Caesar Nieves was found on his back in the kitchen, wearing red checkered pajama pants, several shirts and heavy socks.
He had suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and pelvis. A spent .45-caliber casing was found nearby.
Blood was found throughout the kitchen and adjoining dining room.
A butcher-style knife with blood on the blade and handle was recovered near the refrigerator. Bullet fragments were also found in the kitchen and living room.
An egg sandwich and a glass of coffee were on the kitchen island.
Ambulance personnel met Dolores Nieves a short distance from the home.
She complained of head pain and had a small injury on the left side of her head. She was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Pocono, where records show she was treated for a small laceration and hematoma to her scalp.
A Glock 21 semiautomatic pistol was recovered outside the residence. It contained a spent casing and a magazine with 10 live rounds. A sledgehammer was found on the porch. Dolores Nieves acknowledged removing both items from the house after the incident.
An autopsy the following day found two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and pelvis and a stab wound to the left side of the neck.
The cause of death was ruled gunshot wounds to the abdomen and pelvis, and the manner of death was ruled homicide.
Dolores Nieves was interviewed three times about what happened. She told investigators her husband tried to kill her and that the gun fired during a struggle.
She is being held in Monroe County Prison after bail was denied. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Thursday before District Judge Colleen Mancuso in Brodheadsville.
