Carbon County Environmental Education Center events

The Carbon County Environmental Education Center has announced the following upcoming events.

Unless otherwise indicated, advanced registration is required. In cases where materials must be purchased in advance, staff may need to turn away those who do not preregister.

CCEEC is located at 151 E. White Bear Drive, Summit Hill, and can be reached by phone at 570-645-8597.

MONTHLY CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS

• Creepy Crawlers: 10-11:30 a.m. March 23. Open to all 2, 3 and 4-year-olds, each session focuses on some aspect of the natural world. Children participate in age-appropriate games, crafts, stories and other activities. Programs are free for members, and a per-child donation is requested of nonmembers. Register by phone. There are no sessions in April and May.

• Nature Club, 6-7 p.m. March 19. Open to all students in grades K through 6. Each meeting begins in an official session where children discuss and vote on club business, with hikes, games, and other nature-oriented activities to follow. Programs are free for members, and a per-child donation is requested of nonmembers. Other meetings will be held April 16, May 21, June 18, July 16 and Aug. 20.

Bird Box Sale

• Bird boxes are now for sale. Install boxes now for spring nesting birds. Assembled boxes and/or kits available for purchase while inventory lasts. Boxes suitable for bluebirds, wrens, tree swallows and other small birds. A limited number of assembled, screech owl/American kestrel boxes are available, preorder only.

Teacher workshop

• A Teacher Workshop: Making the Dead Come Alive will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 5. Participants receive $200 worth of take-home supplies to help bring hands-on specimens safely into the classroom. Only a few spaces remain. Six Act 48 hours.

The workshop is free of charge, but participants are asked to bring their own lunch.

Financial and other support has been provided by the Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Education Grants Program.

​Photo contest

• The submission deadline for the center’s Online Photo Contest is March 7.

Submit up to one photo per category: wildlife, sunrise/sunset, and trails. Photos must have been taken on EEC grounds. All submissions featured on EEC’s Facebook page, where friends and follows can vote for people’s choice.
