Wawa store to break ground this fall

Construction of a convenience store and gas station in the village of Hometown will likely begin in the autumn.

A resident recently asked the Rush Township Board of Supervisors about the schedule for the proposed Wawa.

Township engineer William “Bill” McMullen of ARRO Consulting said all permits for the store at 347 Claremont Ave. (Route 309) have been approved.

“The schedule, from what I heard, is that one company is going to build all the intersections and then Wawa themselves will come in and build the building,” McMullen said.

He estimated that ground would be broken in September or October.

“Don’t expect it to open until the first quarter of 2027,” McMullen said.

Also during the recent monthly meeting, supervisors:

• Approved a request from the Hometown Fire Company to block Center Street on March 28 for an Easter egg event.

• Approved and acknowledged a special event permit submitted by the Ryan Township Fire Company to PennDOT to hold the 72nd annual Schuylkill County Firemen’s Convention on Aug. 22.

• Approved a change order to extend the completion date of a lighting project at Ryan Park in Hometown from Jan. 5 to June 30. MetroTek Electrical will do the work.

• Authorized police Chief Rick Weaver to attend a seminar in State College, and for the township to cover two nights of lodging at $304.14.
