Carbon Career & Technical Institute business
The Carbon Career & Technical Institute’s Joint Operating Committee approved the following:
• The Comprehensive Plan and Professional Development Plan.
• The Treasurer’s Report for January 2026 showing a final balance of $6,213,169.18 in the General Fund, and $100,831.64 in the Student Activities Account.
• The resignation of Maritza Reinbold, substitute/SkillsUSA assistant adviser and reaffirm her advisership position and pro-rated pay, effective Jan. 20, 2026.
• The appointment of Michael Herishko, HVAC instructor, effective March 2. Herishko has a bachelor’s degree from Rowan University in construction management and 20-plus years as an HVAC technician and facilities manager. In addition, Herishko was appointed an extra help instructor in conjunction with the after-school program at $30 per hour on an as-needed basis. Jeremy Pease was appointed as a teacher mentor for Herishko, effective March 2.
• A measure that CCTI contribute an amount not to exceed $99 (total cost) toward AP exam fees for eligible students testing within the 2025-26 school year, and that CCTI contribute an amount not to exceed $18 per exam fee for students taking the PSAT exam within the 2026-27 school year. College Board provides a $37 fee reduction per AP exam for eligible students with financial need. Schools are expected to forgo their $9 rebate for those students, resulting in a cost of $53 per exam.
• Michael Garrant, engineer technologies/technician instructor and robotics club adviser to chaperone six Roclub students to participate in the VEX Robotics Competition on Feb. 21 at an approximate cost of $200 for meals. Note: Funds are available in the 2025-26 General Fund.
• Eight CCTI Auto Collision Repair students attend the Carlisle Automotive Flea Market & Car Corral on April 24 in Carlisle. The event will be chaperoned by Stephen Nesler, ACR instructor, and Kevin Wagner, ACR instructional aide.
• Thirty cosmetology students to attend the Be Well Beauty and Wellness Show in New York City on March 10, at a cost of $3,842 to cover the expense of registration and transportation. The event will be chaperoned by Tammy Marshall, cosmetology instructor, Heather Cassidy, cosmetology instructional aide, and one additional approved chaperone. Funds are available in the 2025-26 General Fund.
• Thirty-three CCTI students to attend the SkillsUSA State Competition held April 8 through April 10 at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center, Hershey, at a total cost of $20,358 to cover the expense of registration, transportation and lodging. The competition will be chaperoned by Joshua Reif, SkillsUSA adviser, Maya Kowalcyk, SkillsUSA assistant adviser, Richard Stettler, SkillsUSA assistant adviser, Nate Rinda, director of technology, and Maritza Reinbold, chaperone/volunteer. Funds are available in the 2025-26 School Sponsored Student Activities budget.
• Eighteen Culinary Arts students to attend the Philly Food Tour on April 24 in Philadelphia. The event will be chaperoned by Ashleigh Rehrig, Culinary Arts instructor, Salvator LoPresti, Culinary Arts instructional aide, and Chris Bavlinka, Culinary Arts instructional aide.
• Ninety CCTI senior students attend Knoebel’s Amusement Resort on May 21 in Elysburg at a cost of $3,386 to cover the expense of tickets and transportation. Sandra Kohutka, senior class adviser, Donna McClain, Health Medical instructor, Nate Rinda, director of technology, and six additional approved chaperones will chaperone this event. Students will be responsible for half of the ticket price ($14.50 of the full $29 cost). The additional $14.50 may be offset by fundraising.
• Voted to authorize administration to pursue the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Facility Improvement Grant for a roof restoration project utilizing a monolithic pour system; approve a local match of up to 25% of the total project cost, not to exceed approximately $500,000, contingent upon grant award; and approve the inclusion of $500,000 in CCTI’s 2028 Capital Plan designated for roofing. Approval of this motion does not obligate Carbon Career & Technical Institute to proceed with construction unless grant funding is awarded and the JOC approves a subsequent contract.
• CCTI Summer Career Academy to be held at CCTI from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for fifth through eighth grade students. The academy is tentatively scheduled for June 15-19, with no cost to the CCTI Joint Operating Committee. The academy is grant funded. At the weeklong academy, approximately 70 to 80 students will experience 10 technical areas with hands-on projects that they can then take home upon completion.
