Fundraiser set for woman hit by car in Thorpe

A 40-year-old Penn Forest Township woman suffered catastrophic injuries Feb. 12 after being pinned between two parked vehicles on North Street, and now her community is scrambling to help her and her two children as she faces a long road to recovery.

Jim Thorpe police officers were dispatched to 713 North St. at approximately 6 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle and lying on the roadway, according to a press release from Police Chief Joseph Schatz. A vehicle driven by Maryann Corcione, 76, of Jim Thorpe, struck Stephanie Biechy as she was attempting to enter her parked vehicle, police said.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser created on her behalf, Biechy was about to head home after a long day at work and a routine doctor’s appointment when the incident unfolded.

“As she was opening her car door, a distracted driver began side-swiping the parked cars behind Stephanie’s,” the fundraiser states. “She tried to get out of the way but ended up crushed between two parked cars.”

The injuries were severe.

“Her pelvis was broken in multiple places, and her back was fractured. The pain is unimaginable, and her recovery will be long,” the fundraiser page reads.

Biechy is a tax analyst and office manager for H&R Block, according to Joseph Cortright, her employer, who reached out to local media to spread word of the fundraiser.

“She is a single mom of two beautiful children who depend on her, and she is lying in a hospital bed wondering how she will provide for them,” the GoFundMe page states.

The incident also drew public attention at a Jim Thorpe Borough Council meeting the same evening. North Street resident Keri Gallagher addressed council members directly, having witnessed the aftermath from her home.

“A pedestrian was just hit on North Street in front of my house,” Gallagher told council. “When are the police and the mayor going to get together to do something about speeding?”

The GoFundMe campaign had raised $3,545 as of Tuesday morning.

“Please donate whatever you can: $5, $10, $25, $50 — every dollar will go directly to securing Stephanie’s children’s well-being and her medical expenses,” the page reads. “If you are unable to contribute financially, please share her story.”
