Trachsville church has fun with chili

It’s an annual tradition that gives members of the Jerusalem United Church of Christ in Trachsville a chance to enjoy fellowship, good food, and to have a lot of fun.

The church held its annual Chili Cookoff and Dessert Contest on Saturday evening in the social hall of the church at 545 Church Drive, Trachsville.

This year, there were 14 entries in the Chili Cookoff, featuring mild and spicy, chili with beans, corn, and other vegetables, all homemade and ready for tasting.

Everybody has their own way of making chili, which is part of the fun.

Lorrie and Keith Nothstein of Kresgeville were one of the entries in the chili cook-off.

“He (Keith) puts spicy V8 in his chili,” Lorrie stated.

The Dessert Contest featured 15 entries including chocolate chip cookies, German chocolate cake, brownies, ambrosia, strawberries on a cloud, and other delicious desserts.

Rachel Borger, a member of the church, is the coordinator of the contest.

“It’s just something we do to get out of the house in the middle of the winter,” Borger said. “Something where we can all hang out and get a free dinner.”

There was no entry fee for cooks, bakers, or the public, but the church did accept donations.

“It’s not a competition to win big prizes; it’s just to hold the title of best chili cooker and best baker,” Borger explained.

Each of the winners received a trophy and a gift bag.

Winners of the Chili Cookoff were:

• 1st place, Shawn George

• 2nd place, Sam Gerhard

• 3rd place, Stephanie Anderson

Winners of the Dessert Contest were:

• 1st place, Kelli George

• 2nd place, Denise Goodhile

• 3rd place, Judy Borger

They also held trivia contests for the chili and the desserts. Winners received gift bags.
