Man charged with threatening to shoot his wife

A Northampton man has been charged with threatening to shoot his wife after claiming he saw a shadow behind her.

According to the affidavit of probable caused filed by officer Jarett Honea of the Lehigh Township Police Department in the case against Robert Kalmar:

At 11:56 a.m. on Feb. 19, Lehigh Township Police Department was called to the 4000 block of Lehigh Drive for a domestic incident.

The caller reported her husband, Kalmar, 71, was holding a gun to her and said he was going to shoot her.

The woman was in the middle bedroom of the residence, and Kalmar was in hallway pointing the gun at her.

Lehigh Township police Chief John Henry, officer Elias Batihk, officer Collin Haupt and Honea responded with the assistance of Moore Township Police Department.

They formed a perimeter around the side and back of the residence.

After a short time on scene, Kalmar was seen at the back of the residence through a sliding-glass door.

Halmar came out peacefully and was taken into custody.

Kalmar told police that “something just went off.”

He just went off and it has been like this for a couple of years, and that there was a homicide and it was a friend of his wife’s.

Henry and Honea spoke with the wife, who stated to Henry she was in her office talking on the phone with one of her work colleagues and believed Kalmar was listening to her speak on the phone.

The woman said Kalmar heard her talking about the disappearance of her friend and work colleague, and that Kalmar said to her she had something to do with killing her.

She said Kalmar has multiple health issues, which included Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease, and that he also has REM sleep disorder from the Parkinson’s disease.

Because Kalmar is not getting that natural deep sleep when he dreams, she said he cannot separate the dream from reality.

The woman said that Kalmar woke up the other morning and told her he had died and that she was in her office when he got up and stood in the hallway with a loaded handgun pointed at her.

The wife stated Kalmar had his finger on the trigger, and threatened to shoot and kill her.

A black and silver Kimber .45 caliber handgun was on the table in the dining room.

The wife said this was the gun that Kalmar was pointing at her.

Kalmar was transported to Lehigh Valley Muhlenberg Hospital for an evaluation.

Honea accompanied Northampton Regional EMS in transporting Kalmar.

While in the hospital, Kalmar told the doctor that he pointed his gun at his wife, but that he was not going to kill her.

Kalmar said he had been seeing shadows lately and saw a shadow behind his wife.

Kalmar was involuntarily committed for a mental health evaluation.

He faces charges of terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.

He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing March 5 at the Northampton County Central Court in Easton.
